The Little Village Pond

Lyrics by by Robert A. Gray
This track is taken from a BBC Radio 2 broadcast series 'Rolf's Walkabout'.

There was a little duck
In the middle of a pond
In the middle of a village green
Who thought he'd try his luck
In the world that lay beyond
And go where he'd never been.
When the villagers asked him why
This was his reply,

Oh, I'm ever so fond
Of our little village pond,
I swear I could not be fonder,
But now and again
I get a little yen
To wander
Yonder.
For when you're a duck
You feel a bit stuck
If you've nothing all day to do
But wearily go
To and fro,
And occasionally fro and to.

So, abandoning the pond,
He went bobbing down the stream
Till he came upon a great big lake.
To that little vagabond
It was almost like a dream,
The voyages he could make!
He took to it like a shot;
(Or, a duck to you know what!)

Oh, I may have been fond
Of our little village pond
But of this one I'm even fonder.
Just look at the length,
It 'll take me all my strength
To wander
Yonder.
I'll no longer feel stuck
Like that other little duck
Who had nothing all day to do
But wearily go
To and fro
And occasionally fro and to.

But suddenly as he sang,
From out of the reeds there rang
A deafening noise, BANG! BANG!
BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!
A couple of his feathers flew.
Next moment, he did too!

Abandoning the lake,
He went whizzing down the stream
At a rate of knots for ducks unmatched,
Leaving feathers in his wake
As he headed for the gleam
Of the village where he'd been hatched
The prodigal had returned,
His lesson truly learned.

Oh, I'm ever so fond
Of our little village pond,
I swear I could not be fonder.
And never again
Will I get a little yen
To wander
Yonder.
For when you're a duck
It's nice to be stuck
With nothing all day to do
But merrily go
To and fro
And occasionally fro and to.
